Hickory is a large, deciduous tree that grows up to 89 feet tall, and will live up to 200 years. Hardwoods like hickory are tough and renowned for its ability to stand the test of time. Because the wood is so hard, hand carving a bowl is time-consuming and requires patience, especially when preserving and incorporating the unique characteristics of the wood into the design.
This particular piece is especially unusual, with knotholes and visible grain texture. The wood for this piece was reclaimed after a healthy tree collapsed on the side of a creek. Much of the wood from this tree was used for various RJ Arts projects. While more decorative in nature, this particular bowl is perfectly suited to hold fruit or holiday ornaments for a stunning centerpiece sure to start some conversation!
