Description
Hardwoods like Apple are typically used to make furniture, musical instruments, veneers, bowls, and utensils. Wood from heirloom apple trees is lovely to work with and has a beautiful grain. Like other leafy hardwood trees, applewood has a dense grain so it is nicer to carve, and it absorbs less moisture – important when crafting something functional like a spoon.
Apple heartwood can vary from light reddish to deeper red-brown, and this spoon is made from such wood. The grain is streaked with darker and lighter bands of color, the feel is similar to olive wood. Apple is rarely found in lumber form, and small sizes are usually expensive, so reclaiming this particular stash of applewood was a great find.
