Description

Cedar is a strong but softwood good for carving utensils because it doesn’t crack or shrink in water. Red cedar is often used for outdoor carvings due to the wood’s ability to age well and the strength for survival over years of exposure to the elements. The Missouri Eastern Red Cedar is actually a juniper tree that is primarily used for cabinet wood.

Carving intricate designs with cedar wood is challenging because the wood is fairly soft, as well as brittle – this means it can chip or tear easily during carving. Richard handcrafts every piece using only hand tools, and the straight grain of this piece of wood perfectly influenced the “tulip” shape that emerged. The spoon is treated with mineral oil and finished with his own “wood butter” recipe.

How chefs and cooks use a “tasting spoon” – when cooking, dip your cooking/serving spoon into the dish, move it from above the dish, drop the food into your tasting spoon without the two ever touching. Taste.
